The Public Ministry of Paraguay reported Tuesday that it opened an investigation to former President Horacio Cartes (2013-2018) for alleged facts of criminal association influence peddling money laundering , among other crimes.
The ministry informed that the decision was taken after analyzing " sensitive elements and data obtained by the prosecutors team, meetings held with representatives of the Public Ministry of Brazil and with the Federal Police of that country. "
In addition to the above, the ex-president will also be investigated for frustration of criminal prosecution aggravated passive bribery and" other punishable acts that could arise from this case. "
For this purpose, a team consisting of three agents of the Specialized Unit for Economic Crimes and Anti-Corruption and d e Money Laundering. The coordination of the team will be in the hands of the fiscal agent Liliana Alcaraz.

According to Brazilian authorities, Cartes helped escape the Justice to the moneymaker Darío Messer, one of the central people in that money laundering scheme, and arrested the year passed in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo.
The Brazilian Prosecutor's Office issued an arrest warrant against Cartes in November, which is in Paraguay, but last week the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) granted a requested 'habeas corpus' for his defense.
The ruling, however, was taken in a precautionary manner by a single magistrate and the STJ judges are expected to make a final decision in this regard.
