TORONTO — Dallas Keuchel has teams willing to go more than one year. The Yankees would like to add the free agent left-handed starter, but just for the remainder of what has a very good chance of being a special season.
The Yankees would like to keep the dollars at a prorated $17.9 million, which was the qualifying offer Keuchel turned down from the Astros this past offseason and became a free agent. Keuchel has to decide if a multi-year deal is more to his liking.
Although situations such as this often move quickly, this one has already taken longer than most anticipated because every day he isn’t signed the dollars dip. On the other side, every day of nothing happening delays the exact date Keuchel can make his first start of the season.
The Yankees certainly have a need for Keuchel despite their rotation playing a part in their 38-22 record following an 11-7 loss Wednesday night to the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
Keuchel would not only supply a front-end starter to the rotation to help in the postseason if the Yankees get there, he would strengthen the rotation to make sure the Rays, who are 1 ½ games out, and the Red Sox, 6 ½ games back, don’t catch the front-running Yankees in the AL East.
