Giants hire Marc Colombo as offensive line coach off Cowboys staff

MOBILE, Ala. – The best Giants teams that won their two most recent Super Bowls featured solid play and coaching from their offensive line. This edition of the Giants, with Joe Judge installed as the head coach, wants to get back to that, which is why Marc Colombo is expected to come aboard as the offensive line coach.

Colombo, 41, makes sense. He played 11 years in the NFL and was a 1991 first-round pick of the Bears. Since 2016, he has coached the Cowboys offensive line and that unit is annually one of the best in the NFL, loaded with talent. Thus, former Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, hired by Judge as Giants offensive coordinator, has tremendous familiarity with Colombo. Judge met with Colombo at the Senior Bowl and it became a match.

Colombo has this Giants connection: He was a teammate at Boston College of Chris Snee, one of the best guards to ever play for the Giants.

Giants ownership and the front office was not happy with the work the last two seasons by Hal Hunter, hired by Pat Shurmur to coach the offensive line. The development of Will Hernandez from Year 1 to Year 2 was not as rapid as expected.

Colombo will try to hasten the process. He is considered to be an excellent technician and falls into the “teachers not presenters’’ edit Judge has for his assistants.
